Ideas, Ideas, Ideas!!!

Last year I posted some educational and fun games that I thought my GT students would like, since the holidays are right around the corner.  Some of these items can be found in our room, and  I noticed that the students seem to gravitate toward them when we have indoor recess. Best of all, almost all of these items can be found on Amazon. Happy shopping!

FIRST GRADERS - Friday, November 13th
Students were on a scavenger hunt to find the scholar bag. Today's Depth & Complexity - BIG IDEAS .

After reading The Tortoise and the Hare, the students filled out the main idea and the supporting details of the book.

THIRD GRADERS
During GT this week we reviewed some math vocabulary that
the third grade teachers gave us for the upcoming math Benchmark. After that we went to the fifth grade computer lab to practice Scratch and Mrs. Horan said that soon we’ll be making
awesome holiday cards, and then we went back to the class room to read the
Phantom Tollbooth. During lunch we went over our homework, which was to write a familiar nursery  rhyme using only 6 words as the clue. Later on we went to our tables to do some algebra, and then we reviewed  the four main lobes of the brain which are the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe, the frontal lobe and
the temporal lobe. We then learned about neurons and used a great app on our iPads to explore more about axons, dendrites the cell body and synapse.  We even had cool music playing. We played a game, pretending to be a neuron and exchanged electrical currents.
Jathan and Narya working on their Scratch project.

Looks like the 3rd graders are hard at work solving algebraic equations.
Learning parts of the brain in a fun way.

                                                            4th Graders

Today was a great day like every GT day. The first thing we did was we created our 700 year timeline. It was more than 30 feet long. The timeline was about historical events that happened during artists' lives. Such as the Titanic, and a lot more. Next, we did a thing called observations of history. What we did is we walked around with our journal jotting down interesting notes. Mine was that there was more wars in the 1800s than the 1900s. I think this is because it's harder to take over countries because we have better technology. Next, we looked at an app called Visual Poet. This app allows you to create messages and more. Me and Aidan ( not Aydin) did one of the messages on Royce. We called it The Rapping Royce and we made him rap. Next we studied the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci. We discovered that our wing span is the same length as our height. And we measured parts of our bodies. Then we read Chasing Vermeer. It's a very interesting book. I saw the frog in the picture once again. Then we wrapped up our day and headed out the door saying our goodbyes. Happy Birthday!!!

5th graders

This week in G.T. we had a lot of FUN! We started our day by answering  the question : Which is taller -frustration or -joy? Why?. Then, we went to the computer lab and had to answer questions about truths and lies, for example: Is there a difference between a fib and a lie? It got us thinking in the G.T. mode. Later, we read The Giver, and found out a lot of interesting things. After that we presented our homework, and we were told this week's homework. Finally, we got to play 1010!, which is a VERY addicting game! I am REALLY excited for next week in G.T.!!!

Gloria

Unfortunately, this week our G.T. day was short, due to benchmarking, but we still had a great amount of fun! We started the day by wearing our badges, that had our "assignments"(jobs) on them. Then, we did a type of paper where you are given letters and have to unscramble them to make a quote. It took us a while, but we discovered it said "The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal - Aristotle" Next, we talked about what it meant and looked at other quotes also said by Aristotle. Finally, we read some more of The Giver. I am really looking forward to next week!!!

Group discussion: What do you think a dog is thankful for?
