Dr. Seuss, Inventions, Pennies,Ipad apps,
and Pi!!!!

Kindergarten started today and it was so great to see the kids so excited to come to class. Our first unit  comes from the lessons Postcards from Dr. Seuss, which uses thinking skills to challenge high ability learners and also allows for differentiation.  Content, process, and product are emphasized throughout to create an authentic experience.

First Graders:
Students were to design an invention that would allow Sybil the Detective to get to the other side of the pond. They wrote a story as to why she needed to get to the other side and what she did when she got there. Below are pictures of the students designs and clever, well written stories.

SURVIVAL!
Well, sometimes the lesson you had planned sort of goes off o
n a tangent of its own, as we well learned today. After talking about cold fronts and how quickly weather can changed ( if you live in Texas you know exactly what I am talking about), our conversation lead to what a person would need to survive in their home if they knew they might be stranded there for a few days. It was a perfect opportunity to teach the students the words,"cabin fever", since none of them had heard of it before. Students were given 30 minutes to illustrate what objects they felt were necessary for them to survive. Below are the results....
